Continuing the Vision

W.B. Konkle Memorial Library continues to showcase the vision and passion of founder Mrs. Joan Konkle for her community and art.

Before the Konkle Library was what it is today, Mrs. Joan Konkle, wife of Dr. W.B. Konkle, envisioned a place for imagination and a place to encourage the love of learning and reading.

In researching Mrs. Konkle’s history, we have learned that Mrs. Joan Konkle was known for her artwork, including her self-portrait. It has been restored and now hangs in the library lobby.  If you look very carefully in the bottom left corner, you will see her initials that were discovered when the portrait was restored.  We also know that she bartered her oil paintings to get work done at her home after her husband passed, as some of the pieces have since been donated by Montoursville residents to the library with attached notes.

The Konkle library got its humble beginnings on Broad Street, relocated for a short time to other locations, then settled back on Broad Street at its current location, in the old People’s Bank, that still houses the original bank vault.

After a successful renovation in 2023, the Konkle Library continues its commitment to enriching the community. The library has transformed its children’s room into a vibrant gallery displaying the artwork of local students.

“Showcasing student art is a wonderful way to inspire creativity, build community, and encourage lifelong learning,” said Bob Weaver, Board President.

The library partnered with the Montoursville Area School District to highlight the artwork of local students.  Art teachers from the district carefully select pieces based on their storytelling, originality, and excellence. The artwork is displayed at the library in a rotating exhibit, ensuring that a variety of pieces are featured throughout the year.

Dan Taormina, School Superintendent, supported by Curtis Myers, McCall Middle School principal said, “Libraries are where you hear and read stories, and art can tell a story as well. What a great combination for our community and students to experience.”

Students whose artwork is selected are honored with a small reception, each spring and fall and a certificate from the library.

“We are grateful for the support of the Montoursville School District and the art teachers who have embraced this project,” said Dennis Correll, a volunteer board member. “We hope that this showcase will inspire students to continue exploring their artistic passions.”

The library invites the public to visit the updated space and admire the talents of local youth on display. Donations to support the Local Student Artists Project are welcome and will be used to cover the costs of framing materials, art supplies, events, and student recognition. A sustaining fund is being established to ensure the project’s continued success.
